Artist Research - Dan Mountford

Dan Mountford

Moving on from Hans work, I've gone back to the idea of combining natural/landscape with the human figure/facial feature. For my final artist research I came across this artist called Dan Mountford.

Dan uses the same idea of using natural feature such as landscape to combine with the human facial area. From looking at his photos there all black and white I can tell he used a digital camera to take him because I can tell by the quality of the photographs that there all not granulated like is what happens when images are took with a film camera.

A factor I do like about Dan's images is the
black and white images. I like this tool because it combines the two different images really well and almost mold them into one images all together. However a factor I does effect his work is the use of the black and white images because the combination of the images with the layer of black and white, it hides the detail of the texture of the image.

This image above is my preferred image, my reason for this is because I like this use of the water and the building with in the facial part of the photo. The last shoot I did with combining humans and water I didn't believe was successful, but using similar landscape view like Dan Mountford I believe I could over come the issue.

What else I have learnt from his work is the idea of cutting around the landscape view to almost mold into my figure body. This is shown in the very first image. I like the way the two images contrast themselves and give of the feeling of two different textures to the audience; The skin on the face represents the smoothness and also the model is also wearing no makeup so this also shows the symbol of natural beauty. The building from the back of head that works against this idea of the sharpness of the points giving the image some attitude and also the building it self presenting that it is man made to look beautiful and hasn't got the natural beauty like the model face used.
These two combination of mixed textures and symbolisations in the images I believe really work well together and really balance each other out to create an interesting image of representation.

What I Intend To Do Next

After Studying Dan Mountford's work I intend to do a shoot with water and use the idea of cutting into the landscape to add more effect. I also want to do another shoot with a model with out makeup to represent the idea of natural beauty. Even though Dan's work is very professional looking and works well in my images I want the experiment to see how I can bring in colour to the edits and see if this way of presenting the two images work well of each other.
